Fairtrade
Fairtrade is about fair prices, good working conditions, sustainability and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world. Companies must pay sustainable prices (which must never fall lower than the market price) and an additional amount, the Fairtrade Premium, for social and environmental projects.
The Fairtrade Foundation
This organisation is committed to tackling poverty and injustice through trade. The Foundation works with businesses, civil society organisations and individuals to improve the position of producer organisations and to help them achieve sustainable improvements for their members and their communities.

Akoma and Fairtrade
Akoma is proud to be working with the Fairtrade Foundation to help improve the lives of the workers in our cooperative in Ghana.
The Akoma Cooperative Multipurpose Society is located in Bolgatanga, an area in the Upper East Region of Ghana that is poverty stricken. Because unemployment is high in this area of Ghana, the cooperative is an important source of income for women in the community. The harvest runs from June to October and Akoma produces around 45 tonnes of shea butter a year.
The workers are exploring other crafts and skills to keep them busy throughout the year, such as by making soap, cocoa butter and dressmaking. Akoma aims to increase production to grow the cooperative further, providing more opportunities for the local community.

Akoma’s Fairtrade beauty products
Fairtrade certified beauty products contain Fairtrade certified ingredients. Akoma’s raw organic shea butter and Ghanaian black soap have been certified by the Fairtrade Foundation to carry the FAIRTRADE Mark. You will notice the Fairtrade icon on our packaging.
Our raw shea butter is also edible and registered as a food grade product. As well as being Fairtrade, it is also organic.
